Zombies vs. Teenagers

Alright, although the blog is not officially ready (when I've returned to my condo I'll start formating and sprucing this sucker up but until then...), I decided I need to get started reviewing my ever growing list of movies I need to review... pile. I know there are many other review blogs out there, but I'd like to think mine is/will be unique in that I am an artist with unusual tastes who keeps an open mind when going to see films. (It's rare I go into a film expecting to hate it because I feel it taints my perspective a bit.)

So for my first two reviews (I'll be doing two reviews per post) I'm going to do a movie I enjoyed and I movie I... didn't enjoy just to make things hopefully interesting.

ZOMBIELAND (2009)

NICK AND NORAH'S INFINITE PLAYLIST (2008)

Now just a side note, I hate Horror films and I hate High School films. Now, Zombieland isn't enirely a Horror film, as Nick and Norah isn't entirely a high school film. SO IT'S ZOMBIES VS. TEENAGERS. WHO WILL WIN?

Lets talk about Zombieland first.

So one of the first things I liked about this film was the opening. I have a little bit of a background in Motion Media so I tend to get goosebumps when I'm watching something where I love what they're doing with the type and motion. The opening to Zombieland is simple, but it serves the purpose it's meant for well.
Now what I DIDN'T like about this film was the bratty female leads. I spent the whole film wishing they'd get bitten by zombies. But I won't give away what happens with that since the film is fairly new and some of you haven't seen it yet.
But still, overall, this film was very quirky and charming. The whole zombie theme is starting to get pretty annoying, but I like the fact that this film wasn't taking it seriously at all.

Now on to Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist. Did I mention that I don't like High School films? How about how much I loathe teenagers? This film is a good example of why. Not to mention I really don't understand the whole "guy and girl break up, guy meets new girl, old girl gets jealous and starts hitting on guy, guy fights with new girl and gets back with old girl, guy realizes he's meant for new girl and dumps old girl again and gets back with new girl and everyone lives happily ever after the end" plotline that's oh so prominent in too many romance films. You even see this in films that -aren't- romance based. It's a cheap plotline that's way overdone that it's rare anyone gets creative with it. Moulin Rouge! is an example of a film with this same sort of plot that actually uses it in a creative, refreshing way. Nick and Norah is just plain old teenage drama that everyone's already sick of. Maybe if these teenagers actually had anything to legitimately be upset with each other about I'd understand. Did I mention that these same teenagers are all dumb as bricks too? And not in a funny way either. Most of the movie is just them trying to find some stupid drunk chick who wandered off.
This movie was actually a disappointment because I thought it would be more about the music and less about some of the other garbage that got tossed around. And the music it did have I barely remember, so I guess it wasn't all that great in the end either.

So it's probably pretty obvious, but this time around, the Zombies ate up the teenagers. Go figure. I guess they should have followed the rules of surviving Zombieland a little better.
